8-Day High Scardus Trail Self-Guided Trek

The 3rd stage of the High Scardus Trail is perhaps the most technically demanding stage and also not to be underestimated physically. For this, you will be led along the loneliest paths (or off-trail) through the magnificent heathland on the northern slopes of the Sharr Mountains. A mountain lake and pristine forests at the end of the stage complete the outstanding scenic enjoyment of this stage.

Stage 04 of the High Scardus Trail takes hikers from the mountain destination of Prevalla to the traditional village of Gornje Ljubinje, offering a scenic and enjoyable journey through the northern slopes of the Sharr Mountains. Compared to the previous stage, this section features gentler terrain and a shorter distance, making it a more relaxed yet equally rewarding hiking experience.

The trail winds through beautiful alpine meadows, heath-covered hillsides, and peaceful mountain landscapes, where expansive views and a sense of solitude accompany you throughout the day. Following narrow paths beneath the mountain ridges, hikers can fully appreciate the natural beauty and untouched character of this part of the Sharr Mountains.

Arriving in Gornje Ljubinje provides a glimpse into the authentic rural life of Kosovo, where local traditions and hospitality remain an important part of everyday life. After completing the hike, a transfer to the historic city of Prizren awaits, offering the perfect opportunity to explore one of Kosovo’s most vibrant cultural destinations, known for its Ottoman-era architecture, lively atmosphere, and rich heritage.

On the edge of the region known as “Little Mongolia,” south of Brod and Restelica, the Sharr Mountains open into a vast high-altitude plateau that has earned its nickname from locals due to its striking resemblance to the endless open landscapes of Central Asia. This remote area is characterized by its peaceful atmosphere, where encounters are often limited to grazing sheep and their shepherds.

As you make your way across the plateau, the immense sense of space and isolation creates a truly unforgettable mountain experience. The journey then continues with a descent through a scenic valley toward the village of Restelica. Perched dramatically on a steep mountainside, the village resembles an eagle’s nest overlooking the surrounding landscape. Its unique setting and traditional architecture often remind visitors of famous Himalayan settlements, giving Restelica a distinctive charm unlike anywhere else in the Balkans.

This stage leaves the stagged houses o f Restelice behind and gradually opens into a broad, high mountain world shaped by wind, livestock, and seasons. The trail climbs steadily above the village, tracing shepherd paths across rounded ridgelines and wide alpine pastures. In early summer, the slopes are dotted with grazing sheep and simple seasonal huts, while the horizon stretches in long, soft curves toward the Korab massif.
There are few trees and even fewer permanent structures. The sense of scale is striking. You move through a landscape that seems almost oceanic in its rhythm, with wave-like hills rolling toward the distant peaks. On clear days, the views extend far into both Kosovo and Albania.
After passing the border with Albania, the trail eventually begins its descent toward Çajë, a small and traditional mountain village on the Albanian side. Compared to Restelice, Çajë is much quieter and more dispersed, with hamlets spread along the slopes and agricultural plots marking the valley floor.
This is a long and relatively remote stage. There are no shops along the way and no reliable mobile signal in most sections. Adequate water and provisions are essential.

This stage of the High Scardus Trail leads from Caje to the remote mountain village of Radomire, crossing one of the most scenic sections of the journey. The trail begins with gentle alpine terrain before gradually opening into wider high mountain landscapes with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks.

Along the way, hikers pass through quiet valleys, open pastures, and untouched wilderness where the sense of isolation and natural beauty becomes increasingly present. This is a stage defined by tranquility, wide horizons, and the raw character of the Sharr and Korab mountain region.

The route eventually descends toward Radomire, a traditional Albanian mountain village located at the foot of Mount Korab. Known for its authentic rural atmosphere and stunning setting, Radomire offers a welcoming end to this rewarding stage of the trail.

Tackle the highest peak in both Albania and North Macedonia (2,764m). The trail is steep but well-trodden, leading to an incredible 360-degree roof-of-the-Balkans view.
